Virginia Beach City Council Adopts Nearly $3 Billion Budget for Fiscal Year 2027

The Virginia Beach City Council has unanimously approved a budget of nearly $3 billion for the upcoming fiscal year 2027, marking a 3.36% increase over the previous year’s amended budget. This decision reflects the city’s commitment to addressing key areas such as employee compensation, tax relief, and public safety enhancements.

Employee Compensation and Benefits

In recognition of the hard work and dedication of city employees, the adopted budget includes a 3.5% salary increase effective in July. Additionally, funds have been allocated for further salary adjustments in January 2027 to ensure positions align with current market rates. Sworn personnel and select other employees are set to receive a 1.5% bonus, capped at $1,500, during the fiscal year.

Tax Relief Measures

To provide financial relief to residents, the budget introduces a one-time 10.1% credit on personal property tax. This credit, up to $80 per vehicle based on assessed value, will apply to each personal vehicle owned by city residents, aiming to ease the tax burden on the community.

Public Safety Enhancements

Addressing public safety concerns, particularly in the Oceanfront area, the council has implemented measures such as temporary curfews to curb violence. A task force has been established to study public safety issues and is expected to deliver recommendations in October. These initiatives underscore the city’s proactive approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents and visitors.

Community Engagement and Future Planning

The budget approval process involved extensive community engagement, including public hearings and consultations with city departments. This collaborative approach ensures that the budget aligns with the needs and priorities of Virginia Beach’s diverse population. Looking ahead, the city remains committed to fostering a safe, prosperous, and inclusive environment for all.
